THE PROBLEM

Why Most Natural Deodorants Stop Working

Natural deodorant isn’t supposed to stop sweat. But it should help you stay fresh. Here’s why so many formulas fall short, and why MINT takes a different approach.

“It worked at first” is one of the most common things people say about natural deodorant. The other is less printable: “I smell like s*** after 3 hours!”

Real testing doesn’t happen sitting still.

The disappointment is real. You switch because a new natural deodorant smells good, but find yourself reapplying at lunch. Maybe your shirt is part of the problem. Maybe natural deodorants just don’t work.

Natural deodorant has a different job

Natural deodorant is not antiperspirant. Antiperspirants block sweat glands to reduce wetness. That’s why the FDA regulates them. They literally change how your body works. As dermatologist Hadley King explains in Harper’s Bazaar, deodorants don’t prevent wetness. They usually just mask the odor.

That difference matters. Most natural deodorants add a scent on top of your natural scent, which means their performance changes with heat, activity, stress, fabric, and the chemistry of your underarms that day.

Because “natural” deodorants aren’t regulated, two sticks that look similar on a shelf can work very differently once the day gets going.

The formula can smell nice without holding up

A pleasant scent is not the same thing as odor control. When the formula fades, or it cannot keep up with odor-causing bacteria, fragrance and body odor can start competing instead of cooperating. That was our most common complaint at Trona Labs, and it led us to our mission: Nobody wants to smell like BO, but natural deodorants can make us smell like an unholy mix of BO and some artificial scent, which is even worse!

The reviews of natural deodorants tell a consistent story. One Amazon reviewer of PiperWai’s stick wrote:

“I decided to try the stick version of this product for ease of use. Not sure if it’s because it goes on thinner or if it’s formulated differently, but I DID NOT like it. After using it 2 days, I discovered it didn’t work as well for me. Besides being more expensive, the fact that I could smell myself by noon??? Ya. No. H3ll no.”

An Amazon reviewer of Schmidt’s, who works outdoors, put the challenge more practically:

“So I thought I’d try this stuff. I will say it smells really good initially. I work outside in a garden center so I tend to sweat a lot. With the secret I never had “pit sweat circles” or odor. That’s one of the things I loved about it. This deodorant is probably better for someone who doesn’t sweat a lot. Cuz after 8 hours of work, I have sweaty pits and starting to smell a little.”

Trona Labs exists because we hear these people. A natural deodorant has to do more than smell good at 8:00 a.m.

“All-day” has to mean more than a few hours

A reviewer on Thingtesting described their experience with Each & Every this way:

“I like the ingredients, scents and look of the product. But, the deodorant only protects me for a few hours.”

A Reddit reviewer had an even blunter take on Native, one of the biggest names in natural deodorant:

“Nah, if you’re naturally sweaty, that Native deodorant will have you smelling like BO in a couple hours.”

Trona Labs wants to solve this exact problem. People don’t buy deodorant for a brief, lovely opening act. They buy it because they want to feel comfortable through a normal day.

Why baking soda makes a difference

Baking soda close-up

Baking soda — the one ingredient in MINT that actually neutralizes odor.

Baking soda is a mild base that helps neutralize odor-causing byproducts of bacteria. It is not there to cover things up with a louder scent. It deals with the odor itself.

Of course, no single ingredient works identically for everyone. Baking soda can be irritating for some people, especially when overapplied. A good natural deodorant should be honest about that instead of pretending one stick has solved the human body.

What we did differently with MINT

We created MINT because we were tired of the same experience: a natural deodorant that made a great first impression, then quietly checked out before the day was over. We wanted a straightforward baking-soda stick that focused on neutralizing odor, not just layering a fresh scent over it.

MINT is not an antiperspirant, and it does not stop sweat. It is a baking-soda-based natural deodorant made for people who want a simple stick that earns its place in the morning routine.

Here’s our goal: we want you to apply MINT in the morning and never think about underarm odor for the rest of the day, no matter how hard your day may be.
