How Much Deodorant Should You Actually Use?

USAGE 101

“If there’s one thing that goes wrong with baking-soda deodorants, it’s this: people use too much.”

Sweat happens whether you’re lifting weights or just living your life.

It’s an easy mistake to make. Swipe it on thick, twice if you’re worried about a big day. But with a baking-soda formula like MINT, that actively works against you.

The right amount: one or two swipes

Apply MINT to clean, dry skin, and give it a few seconds to absorb before getting dressed. Right after a shower or before bed both work well. One or two swipes per underarm is enough for most people to stay fresh all day.

If you’re noticing odor by hour ten, use a little more next time. But start light. You can always add more tomorrow. You can’t undo a heavy-handed application today.

Why overapplying backfires

Two things happen when you use more baking soda deodorant than you need:

  • White residue. A thick layer of any stick deodorant — natural or not — doesn’t fully absorb, and you end up with marks on clothing.
  • Irritation risk goes up. Baking soda is a mild base, but it’s active — that’s exactly why it works so well at neutralizing odor instead of just masking it. More product means more prolonged contact with skin, which leads to the sensitivity a small minority of users report in switching from an antiperspirant.

Most people find their skin adjusts within the first couple of applications once they’ve dialed in the right amount. Less product, same result, less risk.

A different mindset than antiperspirant

Antiperspirants physically block sweat glands, so the calculus is different: more product, more blocking.

MINT works differently. Baking soda neutralizes the odor-causing byproducts of bacteria on contact. It doesn’t need volume to do its job. It needs contact with clean, dry skin, in a small amount, consistently.

Think of it less like sunscreen (where more coverage matters) and more like a seasoning. A little goes a long way, and too much just gets in the way.
